The human experience is brokenheartedness. We all have a general existential aloneness, but to have a broken heart on top of it, we feel more alone than ever. This is a verse that addresses that we’re really not alone in our brokenness. The Great Someone is near to us, in the midst of it. The ancient text reminds us that He’s faithfully been healing broken hearts for 3000+ years.
It’s unusual for someone not to be brokenhearted. People may look like they have it all together — they may be outwardly successful, or beautiful, or appear happy — but inside, they’re carrying around a broken heart. I’ve seen this over and over again in my conversations with many people from many cultures.
I know what it is to be brokenhearted. I grew up with a severely disabled father who lived in a hospital for 8 years. I was a latchkey kid in New York City. I cried myself to sleep, as many of you have. It was the broad brushstroke of my childhood into my teens. Even if other people are insensitive to one’s pain, the Lord is near to the brokenhearted.
